Blacksmithing

The anvil, the patterns and the grindstone

Double-click the anvil beside the village furnace to open the workbench. Patterns are grouped into collapsible sections for blades, axes and blunt weapons, polearms, tools, shields, helmets, mail armor, and plate armor. Search by pattern or section name, or use the Weapons, Tools, Shields, and Armor filters. Can forge shows the patterns your Blacksmithing and carried materials allow; locked patterns show the Blacksmithing level required to forge them.

Choose a metal, and a wood for patterns that need it. The workbench shows how much you carry and how much the pattern needs. Press Forge when you meet the skill and material requirements. Hold the bright numbered work zone and release in the charge ring’s bright band. Click and hold the active number directly; no zone selection is needed.

Metals rank Copper, Gold, Silver, Iron, Steel, then Black Steel, and a better metal makes stronger work. Each tier adds a tenth of a piece’s Iron armor, so a breastplate that gives 10 armor in Iron gives 7 in Copper and 12 in Black Steel. Weapons gain half as much, from 85% of their Iron damage in Copper to 110% in Black Steel. Better metals also wear more slowly and keep their edge longer.

Clean strikes make better work. Higher-tier metals have narrower timing bands; Black Steel has half the window of Copper at the same skill. Eight or ten blows finish a pattern, with one reheat available. Materials are spent at completion; cancelling keeps them. At Grandmaster Blacksmithing (100.0), exceptional items bear your name as a permanent maker’s mark. Unwanted metal equipment can be recycled at the furnace for a reduced return.

Mundane bladed and pointed weapons lose edge on landed blows. Magic weapons always keep their full edge damage and only lose durability; they never need sharpening. A dull blade keeps more of its damage in a better metal, from 50% for Copper to 75% for Black Steel. Arms Lore shows the edge rating and current damage percentage.

Double-click the grindstone to sharpen a carried weapon. Click the wheel as the guide crosses the bright angle for six passes. Cleaner passes restore more edge; each completed attempt costs one maximum durability. Cancelling costs nothing. Blunt weapons and bows do not need sharpening.
