Thieving

Snooping and stealing

Snooping and Stealing are skills you use from the skills window or a hotbar slot. Both raise a cursor, and both want you standing right beside your mark: another player or a townsperson.

Snooping

Target someone with Snooping to peek into their backpack. It opens beside yours, with their name on it. Click a thing to see what it is and what it weighs. Double-click a bag inside to peek into that too; the deeper a bag lies, the harder the peek.

You can shift things about in their pack, one at a time: drag a thing and only a ghost of it follows your cursor. Let it go somewhere else in the same bag and a bar fills while you work it over (quicker the better you are), then it moves, or your fingers slip. Walk away, or let them walk away, and the window shuts.

A failed peek or shift may be noticed. Your mark is warned and you turn grey to them, so they may strike you freely; anyone watching sees what you were doing. Hidden, you are noticed far less often, but a fumble can give you away.

Stealing

You need a free hand. With the Stealing cursor up, click a thing in a pack you are snooping, or click the person to take whatever your hand closes on first. The heavier the thing, the harder the theft: a Grandmaster lifts up to ten stones and nothing heavier, and to keep improving you must steal heavier things. From a pile you take as much as your hand can hold, up to all of it.

A theft that fails is always noticed: you turn grey, and in town the guards may be called on you. A theft that works is usually noticed too: your mark learns something is gone and who took it, and you turn grey all the same. Only a lucky one, one in four at Grandmaster, goes unseen: you stay blue, but anyone who attacks you commits no crime by it and sees you grey from then on.

If the guards cut you down for a theft, what you were caught taking goes back to its owner first.
